Training Course on Ocean Observation System, operational Services and Ocean Data Utilization
during March 09 - 10, 2023
Organized by
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean)
INCOIS, Hyderabad, India

About the Course:

An important objective of INCOIS is to establish, maintain and manage the systems for data acquisition, analysis, interpretation and archival for Ocean Information and Services. The observations form the foundation for understanding the ocean and predicting the changes. Considering the importance of ocean observations, INCOIS have implemented many observational programs such as Argo, drifting buoys, equatorial current meter moorings, coastal ADCP moorings, Bay of Bengal Observatory, XBT/XCTD, wave rider buoys, AWS, etc. Also, INCOIS co-ordinates with International institutes/Universities to deploy and maintain Argo floats, drifting buoys and Moorings (RAMA) array in the Indian Ocean. The above observational program are being effectively utilized for validation of ocean models and satellite derived parameters, and assimilated into ocean models for better nowcasting and forecasting.

INCOIS, being the central repository for marine data in the country, receives voluminous oceanographic data in real time, from a variety of in-situ and remote sensing observing systems. The Ocean Data and Information System (ODIS) provides information on physical, chemical, biological and geological parameters of ocean and coasts on spatial and temporal domains that is vital for both research and operational oceanography. ODIS is supported by the data received from Ocean Observing Systems in the Indian Ocean (both the in-situ platforms and satellites. Further, INCOIS has been designated as the National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) by the International Oceanographic Data Exchange Program (IODE) of International Oceanographic Commission (IOC). INCOIS also serves as the National Argo Data Centre, Regional Argo Data Centre, and also the regional data centre and clearing house for the Indian Ocean region for the IOGOOS Program.

INCOIS has an endeavor to bring awareness among the students and researchers from various organizations through Awareness Workshops and Training programs. In this regard students and researchers are invited to visit INCOIS and spend time with the scientists there by getting aware of the oceanographic data available and get hands on experience with data and various tools for data processing, visualization and quality control.

This training mainly focuses on brining awareness about the data holding from various instruments archived at INCOIS, operational services being rendered by INCOIS and utilization of data for various scientific applications.
