ABOUT THE TALK:

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) is a lead developer of operational Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) systems at the National Weather Service (NWS). These systems are developed through a close collaboration with academic, federal and commercial sector partners. EMC maintains, enhances and transitions-to operations numerical forecast systems for weather, ocean, climate, land surface and hydrology, hurricanes, and air quality for the U.S. and global domains. NOAA’s operational predictions are transitioning to the Unified Forecast System (UFS) framework in order to simplify the operational prediction suite of modeling systems. The UFS is being designed as a community-based, comprehensive atmosphere- ocean- sea- ice- wave- aerosol- land coupled Earth modeling system with coupled data assimilation and ensemble capabilities, organized around applications spanning from local to global domains and predictive time scales ranging from sub-hourly analyses to seasonal predictions.

While operational weather and climate predictions are predominantly using the physical/dynamical earth system models, data-driven machine learning-based weather prediction (MLWP) models have been under rapid development in recent years. These models leverage autoregressive neural network architectures and are trained using reanalysis data generated by operational centers, demonstrating proficient forecasting abilities. One remarkable advantage of these MLWP models is that, once trained, they take significantly less amount of computational resources to produce forecasts compared to traditional numerical weather prediction (NWP) models while maintaining or surpassing the NWP performance.

This talk will provide details on development of the state-of-the-art Earth System Modeling at NOAA, and illustrate the importance of community collaborations in achieving rapid advancements in improving the forecast skill, especially for extreme weather events. In addition, emerging technologies based on artificial intelligence and machine learning for surrogate modeling will be discussed as it relates to changing the landscape of how weather and climate research is done and services are provided to our stakeholders.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Vijay Tallapragada is the Senior Scientist (ST) at NOAA’s Environmental Modeling Center (EMC), leading and advancing the development and operational implementation of community based numerical weather and climate prediction systems within the Unified Forecast System (UFS) framework. He is serving as a co-lead of the UFS Research to Operations (UFSR2O) project, and development manager of the Hurricane Forecast Improvement Program (HFIP), supporting the transition of advanced research into operational applications. He has received many awards and honors including NWS Isaac Cline Award for Leadership (2013), two Gold Medals from the US Department of Commerce (2014, 2019), and NOAA Administrator Award (2018).

Dr. Tallapragada received his M.S. (Meteorology), M.Tech. (Atmospheric Sciences), Ph.D. (Tropical Meteorology) from Andhra University, India, and post-doctoral research faculty at Florida State University prior to joining NCEP in 2006. He has more than 150 publications in peer reviewed journals and book chapters. He was the recipient of AMS Banner Miller Award in 2019 along with AMS Weather and Forecasting Committee Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award, and elected as Fellow of the American Meteorological Society in 2022.

Dr. Tallapragada serves on various committees and advisory boards of international research and operational centers, and has developed extensive collaborations with many countries including India, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Brazil, UK, Oman. His recent efforts resulted in renewing the Monsoon Desk Implementation Agreement with the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences for another 5 years through 2028, which enables more productive interactions between NOAA and MoES facilities in India.
