ESSO-INCOIS, Ministry of Earth Sciences signed Memorandum of Agreement with IOC/UNESCO to jointly conduct training programmes through International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography

ESSO- INCOIS (Earth System Science Organisation-Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services), Ministry of Earth Sciences ,signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, in Paris on 4th July,2013 on conducting training programmes at International Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean) established at ESSO-INCOIS, Hyderabad. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO is the only UN body that coordinates ocean observations, research and ocean services among the member countries.



Dr. Dr. Wendy Watson-Wright, Executive Secretary of IOC/UNESCO signed the MoA on behalf of IOC/UNESCO and Dr. S.S.C. Shenoi, Director, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad signed the MoA on behalf of ESSO, MoES in the presence of H. E. Shri Vinay Sheel Oberoi, Permanent Representative of India at UNESCO, Mr. Sang-Kyung Byun, President, IOC/UNESCO, and the officials and Vice-Chairmen of IOC and the other members of the Indian delegation to IOC assembly.

Under this agreement, ITCOocean will organize national/international level training programmes related to oceanographic data, prediction of the state of ocean including Tsunami and storm surges, independently or in collaboration with other organisations and IOC's IODE (International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange) 'OceanTeacher' programme. Subject to the availability of funds, IOC will bear the cost of international guest faculty, trainees/students in conducting/participating in the training courses at ITCOocean.

On the occasion, Shri. Oberoi recalled the commitment of Government of India on capacity building activity, a core activity of IOC. Dr. Watson, thanked Government of India for taking up the capacity building activities in a big way and also thanked Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, for his vision and support for such activities. Mr. Byun also spoke on the occasion.
