This course introduces participants to the fundamentals of simulating ocean processes using state-of-the-art numerical models and the emerging role of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Earth system science. It combines theory with hands-on practice, covering model setup, data analysis, and visualization, while also exploring how AI/ML can enhance forecasting, pattern recognition, and data-driven research. Through practical sessions, participants will gain the skills to apply both physics-based and data-driven approaches to address real-world challenges in oceanography and climate science.

Aims and objectives:

• Develop a strong understanding of the fundamentals of numerical ocean modeling, including governing equations, parameterizations, and computational techniques.
• Gain hands-on experience in setting up, running, and analyzing simulations with state-of-the-art ocean models.
• Learn how to process, visualize, and validate model outputs against observational and satellite datasets.
• Understand the principles of some basic Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques applicable to Earth sciences.
• Apply AI/ML methods to explore data-driven modeling of ocean state variables.
• Explore hybrid approach that could integrate physical modeling with AI/ML to improve predictive skill and scientific insight.
• Undertake a group mini-project to demonstrate the use of data-driven models in addressing Earth science problems.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Explain the fundamental principles of ocean numerical modeling and AI/ML methods in Earth sciences.
• Set up, run, and analyze simulations using state-of-the-art ocean models.
• Process, validate, and visualize ocean model outputs with observational and satellite datasets.
• Explore AI/ML based data-driven ocean modelling.
• Understand the possible hybrid approaches to improve model predictions.
• Design and present a mini-project that demonstrates the use of data-driven models to address Earth science-related problems.
