Ocean Numerical Modelling and AI/ML Applications to Earth Sciences
during 27 October – 7 November 2025
Organized by
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean) INCOIS, Hyderabad, India.
This course introduces participants to the fundamentals of simulating ocean processes using state-of-the-art numerical models and the emerging role of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Earth system science. It combines theory with hands-on practice, covering model setup, data analysis, and visualization, while also exploring how AI/ML can enhance forecasting, pattern recognition, and data-driven research. Through practical sessions, participants will gain the skills to apply both physics-based and data-driven approaches to address real-world challenges in oceanography and climate science.
Develop a strong understanding of the fundamentals of numerical ocean modeling, including governing equations, parameterizations, and computational techniques.
Gain hands-on experience in setting up, running, and analyzing simulations with state-of-the-art ocean models.
Learn how to process, visualize, and validate model outputs against observational and satellite datasets.
Understand the principles of some basic Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques applicable to Earth sciences.
Apply AI/ML methods to explore data-driven modeling of ocean state variables.
Explore hybrid approach that could integrate physical modeling with AI/ML to improve predictive skill and scientific insight.
Undertake a group mini-project to demonstrate the use of data-driven models in addressing Earth science problems.
Students, researchers, and professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in ocean numerical modeling and the application of AI/ML techniques to Earth system sciences. This course is designed for individuals who wish to have some basic knowledge of numerical and data-driven modeling. It will benefit those aiming to contribute meaningfully to academia, research organizations, industry, and government agencies working on marine and environmental challenges.
