EKAMSAT workshop on Open Ocean Processes: From In-situ Observations to Ocean General Circulation Modelling
during 06-10 October 2025
Organized by
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean) INCOIS, Hyderabad, India.
Enhancing Knowledge of the Arabian Sea Marine environment through Science and Advanced Training (EKAMSAT) is a joint research initiative between India and the USA to study boundary layer processes, air-sea interaction processes, and ecological processes in the Arabian Sea. One of the objectives under this collaboration programme is to conduct a series of workshops for early-career scientists as part of a capacity-building effort. Hence, it is proposed to conduct the 2025 EKAMSAT workshop at INCOIS, Hyderabad, during October 6–10, 2025. The event aims to bring together 24-30 early-career scientists and research scholars from various Indian EKAMSAT partner institutions on a nomination basis. The lectures and hands-on group projects under these workshops facilitated participants to tackle scientific problems using tools such as MATLAB and Python.
The theme for this year’s workshop is: “Ocean Processes: From In-situ Observations to Ocean General Circulation Modelling” with a particular focus on “Fluxes in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea”. The workshop will feature lectures on physical oceanography, basics of ocean turbulent mixing and ocean turbulence measurements, with an introduction to one-dimensional ocean modelling (GOTM-CVMIX), observational methods (ship-based ADCP data processing), ocean reanalyses from models and satellite observations, altimeter data assimilation in wave models, an introduction to ocean observation network over the Indian Ocean, hands-on exercises in in-situ and modelling data, and best practices for communicating science through talks and publications and group projects. Four experts from the USA, along with senior Indian scientists, will participate as mentors and faculty for the workshop.
