Course Overview:


The course is designed to provide participants from the Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (CSSTEAP), in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, comprehensive exposure to the wide range of operational products, data services, and decision-support systems developed by Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). INCOIS delivers near real-time and forecast-based ocean data products to support fisheries, navigation, coastal management, disaster mitigation, and climate applications. The training highlights INCOIS data services, including sea surface temperature, ocean colour, satellite-derived winds, waves, currents, tides, and in situ ocean observations. These datasets are used to generate and disseminate operational advisories such as Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) forecasts, Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) alerts, Coral Bleaching Alerts, Marine Heat Wave monitoring, and ocean state forecasts for safe and efficient maritime operations. Participants will also learn about INCOIS’s ground receiving station, which acquires satellite-derived temperature and ocean colour data, as well as the advanced numerical models and data assimilation systems used for ocean forecasting. In addition, the course provides detailed insights into the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre and the network of instruments used to collect real-time ocean observations for tsunami detection and warning. The course is designed to be a mix of Lab visits and theoretical sessions, covering the areas of interest.


Aims and Objectives:


  • Overview of INCOIS activities.
  • Understand the data and products on ocean state forecast for operations.
  • Understanding the Tsunami decision support systems.
  • Exposure to products and services of INCOIS.
  • Coastal vulnerability maps generation along with inundation along the coast of India.
  • Lab visits to various operational divisions of INCOIS.

Learning Outcome:


  • Knowledge and understanding of INCOIS services and products.
  • Capability to use the web-based software independently from their centres through website.
