Italian research in the Indian Ocean: present and planned activities

Abstract
Italy was actively involved in the first international experiment in the Indian Ocean, IIOE (1959-1960), that generated a wealth of information and motivated further scientific investigation. In occasion of the 50th anniversary of IIOE, a review of Italian research activities (not necessarily all comprehensive) in this crucial area of the global ocean is provided. Even though a formal Italian national plan is not available, the ongoing and future activities are expected to contribute to IIOE-II. Italian scientists from CNR-ISMAR (Consiglio Nazionale Ricerche- Istituto Scienze Marine) are collaborating with NIO (National Institute of Oceanography, Goa) on large scale and also long term wave simulations in the Indian Ocean, and on the related implications for coastal phenomena. Researchers from CMCC/INGV (Centro Euro-Mediterraneo Cambiamenti Climatici and Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia) investigated the influence of the Indian Ocean, its interannual variability and its recent warming on the Indian summer monsoon and they are collaborating with Indian scientists in the framework of the European project INDO-MARECLIM. They are interested in being involved in IIOE-2. The focus of their ongoing work is on using ocean re-analyses to understand dynamical processes in the Indian Ocean associated with its recent warming and with the increased frequency of Indian Ocean dipole events of the last decades. Scientists from Pavia University are participating to IODP Indian expeditions.
