Brief Description (Abstract):

The Antarctica presents the coldest (temperatures between ?25 ?C and ?89 ?C), driest (average RH 0.03%), and windiest (chilly all-year Katabatic winds averaging 15-50 km/h) environment on Earth - a continent at the highest average elevation (2300 m above MSL). Due to its extreme weather system, and unique geo-location around the South Pole, it is one of the last frontiers for the human race. Medical research in recent years has focused on the life-style of Antarctic expeditionary members, exposed to harsh environmental and psychological conditions over a prolonged period of time [1]. The Antarctic milieu comes with extreme cold, intense UV radiation, white-outs, varying magnetic fields, sleep deprivation, altered circadian biorhythms, memory loss, and isolation - causing significant physiological and psychological stresses [2-4].

Purpose: The present study was conducted on Antarctic expeditioners who were the part of 28th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (InSEA) from December 2008 to March 2009 (summer team members) and December 2009 (winter team members). The objective of the study was to analyze the impact of ship borne journey, short and long term exposure to stressful conditions of Antarctica on cell mediated, humoral and mucosal immunity along with well known stress markers which are well known to influence immune system.
