Introduction

Secretary, Ministry of Earth Science, Government of India inaugurated the TIDE PREDICTION SYSTEM FOR INDIAN SUBCONTINENT on 20 July 2010. Information on predicted ocean tides (for five days) for a number of stations along the coastline of the Indian subcontinent is now routinely disseminated through the web (as time series plots / High Low listings) by Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India), Hyderabad. The basic data used for the purpose is the tidal harmonic constants (amplitude and phase) from National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa. Out of the 178 stations, for which the data is presently available, there are 136 Ind ian stations. The other countries for which predicted tidal information is available: Myanmar (12), Sri Lanka (11), Bangladesh (9), Chagos (5), Pakistan (4) and Maldives (1). This information also will be disseminated through Electronic Display Boards in local languages. The predicted tides will be also compared with observations in real time.
