Alternate Title: ORV SAGAR KANYA Cruise No SK-326

Brief Description (Abstract):

The Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2) is a major global scientific program which will engage the international scientific community in collaborative oceanographic and atmospheric research from coastal environments to the deep sea over the period 2015-2020, revealing new information on the Indian Ocean (i.e. its currents, its influence upon the climate, its marine ecosystems) which is fundamental for future sustainable development and expansion of the Indian Ocean's blue economy. A large number of scientists from research institutions from around the Indian Ocean and beyond are planning their involvement in IIOE-2 in accordance with the overarching six scientific themes of the program. Already some large collaborative research projects are under development, and it is anticipated that by the time these projects are underway, many more will be in planning or about to commence as the scope and global engagement in IIOE-2 grows. IIOE-2 Cruise No.2 forms a part of the continuing Ocean Mixing and Monsoon (OMM) programme (2013-2017) aimed at understanding the upper ocean physics and air-sea interaction in the Bay of Bengal. The programme is supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) under the National Monsoon Mission. SK 326 is the 5th cruise under the Ocean Mixing and Monsoon (OMM) program, the other four were conducted onboard Sagar Nidhi (SN 82, SN88, SN 14/2014, and SN100). Main objectives of the 17 day cruise are a) Recovery of the Woods Hole Mooring b) Extensive upper ocean survey of the Northern Bay of Bengal c) Deployment & Recovery of Lagrangian float and deployment of argo floats d) NIOT's 3 mooring operations (Deployment & Recovery of BD11 and Recovery of ITBS).

Supplemental Information:

The overall goals of this cruise were to obtain i) basin-scale upper ocean measurements with ~1 km horizontal resolution and 1-2 m vertical resolution from ships and autonomous instruments, such as uCTD, Ship mounted ADCP, etc, and automated weather station to characterize the surface fluxes ii) detailed measurements capable of resolving the physical processes controlling upper ocean stratification, iii) Deployment of Argo floats and iv) a multi-year record of hourly surface fluxes of momentum, heat, and moisture, as well as hourly measurements of upper ocean temperature, salinity, currents, subsurface light, turbidity, chlorophyll, oxygen and turbulence, from moorings at 18N in the north Bay of Bengal.
