Alternate Title: A coupled bio-physical, ecosystem-scale, examination of Australias international Indian Ocean Expedition 110°E line - Re-visiting 110°E

Brief Description (Abstract):

Nearly sixty years ago Australia contributed to the first International Indian Ocean Expedition by deploying Australian ships along 110oE in the south-eastern Indian Ocean to examine the physical, chemical and biological oceanography of this unusual part of the world’s oceans. In view of climate change, and as part of the second International Indian Ocean Expedition, we put a multidisciplinary complement of scientists on board the RV Investigator to undertake an integrated ecosystem study in the oceanic pelagic domain in May-June 2019. The study included physical processes, bio-optics, nutrients, biogeochemistry, microbes, primary productivity, zooplankton, fishes, whales and food webs.

Status: Completed

Purpose: Assess change in the SE Indian Ocean since the IIOE-1, establish new benchmarks for the 21st century and improve understanding of the pelagic ecosystem.
