XCTD observations in the southwestern sector of the Southern Ocean

Temperature/salinity profiles in the upper oceanic column were recorded at every about a degree in the southwestern Indian sector of Southern Ocean during austral summer of 2007, 2008 and 2009 as a part of IPY initiative. The spacing is dictated by weather conditions and scientific rationale which is predefined.
The purpose is to understand the role of upper Ocean heat content variability over a long period of time (10 years) and its role in fueling heat to the cyclones in the Southern Ocean. The summer monsoon winds originate from the southern hemisphere so there is a need to relate the moisture supplied by the SO region to the winds which cross the equator and deposit the rain over Asian subcontinent.
