The extreme climate has led to the evolution of novel biochemical adaptations. These adaptations in Antarctic microbes may provide useful compounds for use in the biotechnology industry such as cold-tolerant enzymes and antimicrobial compounds. Since only a small fraction of the true microbial diversity in natural environments has been observed and even less has been cultivated, therefore; there is need of assess the use of cultivation; versus molecular methods to describe the biodiversity, phylogeny and bioprospecting of Sediment cores and Ice cores for the different types of microorganisms present (e.g. Bacteria, cyanobacteria, fungi, etc). Comparative studies on flora and ecology of lichens and mosses in Schirmacher Oasis (East Antarctica) and King George Island (West Antarctica). Although much is known of the microbes that inhabit in surface soils of Schirmacher oasis, Larsemann Hills and other areas of Antarctica, but there is fragmentary of data about the microbes that inhabit sediment cores, and Ice cores. This offers a unique opportunity to analyze data on diversity of pristine biotopes, molecular phylogeny, and bioprospecting. Preparation of a monograph on Lichens and Lichenicolus Fungi from Schirmacher Oasis, Antarctica and to observe the contrasting pattern in diversity with other parts of East and West Antarctica.
