The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre has participated in the Xth Expedition primarily to collect background baseline data on natural radioactivity, heavy metal concentration in soil and water, and biological specimens. While radioactivity data and some limited heavy metal concentration data have already been collected on air, water and soil samples from participation in 8th and 9th expeditions: this is the first time BARC made attempts to collect biological samples as well. Fairly complete data base has been built up on all these samples and these are presented in this report. The analytical procedures followed at BARC were mainly by the use of standard chemicals and approved standardisation techniques in case of inorganic parameters and standard reference gases, wherever required. Mans impact on the oceanic environment has always been the cause for great concern. Several investigations on the natural radioactivity levels and on the heavy metal concentrations over the ocean as well as on remote locations have been carried out by various nations in the world. In order to obtain a background baseline data over the South Indian ocean and on the Antarctic continent, extensive sampling has been carried out on air, water, soil, and other environmental samples from BARC participation in the Xth Expedition during November 27,1990 to March 26, 1991.
