The objectives zeroed in on ambient air and water quality assessments, performance evaluation of the Rotating Biological Contactors (RBC) in the wastewater treatment units, enhancement of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) laboratory and its relocation to the old Green House (room) inside the Maitri station. For relocation of the lab basic infrastructure including plumbing for water inlet/outlet, proper electrical outlets, fuming chamber and exhaust arrangement (to vent out gases generated during experiments) was provided in the room. Reagents, glassware, sampling equipments and analytical instruments were arranged in designated areas. Scientific experiment involves human footprints which would lead to contamination, particularly in cold regions and this has only recently become a widely recognized problem. Establishment of infrastructure support to conduct scientific research becomes source of contamination especially in Antarctica. Contaminants typically become mobile in the summer months and are readily dispersed from their immediate sources, where they then cause environmental impacts or pose risks to human health.
