Brief Description (Abstract):

The ~35 km2 land area of Schirmacher Oasis (SO) in east Antarctica is occupied by over 100 and 150 lakes, respectively. Besides these lakes, there are many other dried up lakes which contain sediments making them promising archives for understanding surface geological processes, palaeoenvironment and palaeoclimatic conditions.

Status: Completed

Purpose: High resolution sampling was carried out on several sites of SO during 26th ISEA, 2006-07. Sediment samples were collected by using manual sediment corer or by making pit/trench and also from exposed sections. In general, it was observed that at all subsurface sampling locations in SO region, the permafrost zone was encountered at a depth of 80-85 cm during the summer period. The top most few centimeters of sediment profile is relatively coarse followed by finer sediments wherein the sand, silt and clay distribution varies at different intervals at different locations.
