Brief Description (Abstract):

In six volunteers, who were members of the winter-over team of the 15th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica, serum IgG, IgM and Cortisol were measured before and after eight days of the opioid blocker Naltrexone (NLT) administration. The study was conducted in six phases. There were no significant changes in the IgG levels before and after NLT administration. However NLT administration reversed the decrease in IgM found during the early winter and in the summer phase at the end of the isolation period indicating a role for the opioid receptors. Results of the serum Cortisol values measured before and after NLT administration indicate that the central opioid receptor regulation may vary in humans during different seasons in Antarctica. This may indeed reflect an inherent mechanism involving opioids in providing adaptation to the stressful situation by taking anticipatory cues from the environmental factors.

Status: Completed

Purpose: In Antarctica there is extreme cold coupled with a varying photoperiodicity with long polar days and polar nights amongst many other physical and social stresses, which a human sojourner has to face while on duty in Antarctica. Immunosuppression during Antarctic sojourn has been reported by many authors (Muchmore et al., l970Tashpulatov et al., 1971 Williams et al.,1986 Muller et al., 1995a Muller et al., 1995b Tingate et al., 1997). The observed immunosuppression during Antarctic stay may be due to several factors such as social and physical isolation, extreme cold, alien photoperiodicity or may be due to the compounded stress of all these factors
