Brief Description (Abstract):

During the 26th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (ISEA), two shallow ice cores were recovered from different sites in the Nivlisen ice shelf, north of the Schirmacher Oasis. While the IND-26/B6 ice core (70?11?57.4" S latitude and 12 ? 27 25.1" E longitude) was drilled up to a depth 75 m, the second core IND-26/B7 (70? 13.804 S latitude and 11? 55.738 E longitude) reached a depth of 55 m. Additionally, 55 surface snow samples were collected along three transects in different regions (Larsemann Hills region, Publications Ice Shelf and part of the Amery Ice Shelf and the adjoining inland) within the logistic proximity of the proposed new Indian station Bharati. Environmental analysis using multiple proxies like ionic chemistry, trace elemental chemistry, micro-particle concentration, and microbial diversity in the snow samples provided a wealth of scientific information on the chemical and biological interactions of the snow deposits with the atmosphere.

Status: Completed

Purpose: The ice cores have been studied for the electrical conductivity measurements (ECM) and stable oxygen isotope concentrations. The laboratory data revealed large scale variability in the ECM and isotope parameters in the past, suggesting significant changes in the environmental and climatic parameters during the past several decades.
