Brief Description (Abstract):

This report describes the project activities performed under the 26th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica. Under the project, four different types of Ground Truth Radiometers were designed and developed indigenously. These instruments consist in all 32 spectral bands covering the spectral range from 400 to 2500-nm. Among the 32 bands, four spectral bands are identical to that of AWiFS sensor. These instruments were successfully operated under harsh and hostile environment of Antarctica, and they were used for collecting voluminous ground truth data during the period from December 2006 to March 2007.

Status: Completed

Purpose: 1. To design and develop portable, field operated instruments, Ground Truth Radiometers, by incorporating spectral bands of AWiFS sensor of Resourcesat-1 satellite and also other useful spectral bands in the spectral range from 400 nm to 3000 nm. 2. To select a suitable natural test site at Antarctica and to characterize radiometrically the atmosphere and terrain surfaces covered with snow/ice, water bodies etc. concurrently/non-concurrently with Resourcesat-1 satellite passes. 3. To develop Antarctica as a natural calibration test site for future space-borne optical sensors. 4. To gain more hands-on experience for the development of new generation of ground truth radiometers that meets the specific requirement and works under harsh environment of Antarctica. 5. To establish a vicarious calibration methodology of on-board optical sensor.
