Brief Description (Abstract):
Eighty one varieties of 29 different vegetables, two varieties of grass and one variety of maize were grown in three different media viz. Antarctic soil, Antarctic moss and Peat moss. Performance of leafy vegetables (Spinach, fenugreek, lettuce, parseley, garlic, onion, mint and coriander), cucurbits (cucumber, bittergourd and squash), beans, brinjal, chilli and tomato was quite promising. Cruciferous plants (radish, knol khol, turnip, lai, cabbage and cauliflower) did not respond well during austral summer.
Status: Completed
Purpose: The cold desert of Antarctica supports only an impoverished community of cold tolerant land plants that are capable of surviving lengthy winter months of total or near total darkness during which period photosynthesis can not take place. However, vascular flora in Antarctica consist of only three species of flowering plants (Green and Green, 1963). Growth must occur during short summer period which lasts for a few days to a few months depending on diverse factors like latitude, seasonal snow packs, elevation, topography etc. Moisture is the most important single variable provided mainly by atmospheric water vapour and by local melt supplies from snow, drift snow and permafrost. Stream run-off is exceedingly rare. Extreme cold, high winds and aridity inhibit growth even during summer in most areas. Antarctic plants total about 800 species (Benton,1980) of which 350 are lichens and 100 are bryophytes.
