Brief Description (Abstract):

An influx of Adelie penguins seems to have occurred during the fourth sortie when their highest numbers were recorded. It is also possible that the high numbers were due to the peak in the moulting, as during that period penguins do not enter water. Hence, the major reason for the variation in numbers of animals seen seems to be the dynamic ice habitat that is used for basking by the animals. The prevailing weather conditions, dial activity pattern, the moulting period and the low sample size (no. of sorties) also affect the number of animals' seen, thus causing variations in counts. Some corrective measures have been suggested and it is stressed that these factors be further investigated to develop, correction factors for abundance estimates.
