Brief Description (Abstract):

It is a well-known fact that stress generates free radicals that may cause lipid peroxidation and affeact the antioxidant status of the body. The body has certain set mechanisms to exert scavenging action on free radicals that include some antioxidant enzyme systems like super oxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase, glutathione-s-transferase and glutathione reductase which are involved in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species directly or indirectly Low levels of these antioxidant enzymes will cause accumulation of free radicals and may finally actively participate in the process of tissue injury (Mulden et al, 1991). According to another study free radicals damage tissue both at cellular and sub-cellular level by causing lipid peroxidation in the cell membranes and the inactivation of membrane bound enzymes (Florence, 1995).

Status: Completed

Purpose: There is a provision of very good nutritional diet to the members of the expedition, yet the scientific field lacks the data related to nutritional requirements in stressful Antarctic climate. Keeping the above view in mind, a food supplement of various rasayana herbs was prepared and a study was carried out to look into the adaptogenic effects of rasayana herbs on aging process at Antarctica.
