Brief Description (Abstract):

An emergent requirement for a new water supply system circumventing the use of MEG had to be developed and installed at Indian Antarctic Research Station 'Maitri' taking into consideration the Methylene Ethylene Glycol mixture leakage in the recent past which could pollute the Priyadarshini lake which is a major source of water supply to the station. So an alternative solution was thought out by electrically heating the water supply line instead of conventional water and MEG mixture heating arrangement. Also another emerging requirement was the shifting of power generation and supply system from inside of the A-Block of the main Maitri station to outside which had to be developed and installed at Antarctica during XVI Indian Antarctic Expedition to meet the demand of the station 'Maitri' taking into the past experience of a fire accident.

Purpose: The Research &amp Development Establishment (Engineers), Pune is one of the establishments under DRDO. The association of R&ampDE(Engrs.), Pune with the Indian Antarctic Expeditions started from III Expedition when indigenously manufactured structures /equipments were sent to Dakshin Gangotri (DG) for trials in the extreme conditions of winter. Based on the feedback and the requirements projected by the teams, further structures/equipments were sent in the subsequent expeditions with further improvements and modifications. In continuation of the support, R&ampDE(Engrs.) designed and constructed Maitri, Indias second permanent station during VII and VIII expeditions and a Power House in X expedition with fully indigenous material and equipments. The generating sets were commissioned in XI expedition, however, due to a fire accident in the power house a new generating sets accommodation, Aditya, was erected by XII expedition and Bhaskara by XIII expedition.
