Brief Description (Abstract):

This digital database contains details of mercury geochemistry in the sediments of Kongsfjorden, Ny Alesund, Arctic. The main aim of this study is to create background information on the geochemistry of mercury in the Kongsfjorden sediments which will support the ongoing mercury studies in this area and provide a platform for the studies on mercury geochemistry in the perspective of climate change. Also this study aims to understand the bioavailability of mercury in the sediments.

Status: Ongoing

Purpose: 1. To study the speciation of mercury in the sediments ? physical (fractionation) and chemical (inorganic, organic-methyl mercury, total mercury) 2. To understand the fractionation of mercury in the sediments and its geochemical relation with the physicochemical parameters like S, Fe, Organic Carbon, humic acids, pH and temperature in the sediments of Kongsfjorden 3. To assess the mercury content variations with respect to grain size variation in sediments 4. To assess the bioavailability of deposited mercury in the sediment 5. To assess the mercury content in benthic biota (benthic food web)
