Brief Description (Abstract):

Monitoring of the concentrations of metal ions (including heavy metals) is an important prerequisite for the assessment of the aesthetic value of the lake water of Antarctica. The toxic impacts of heavy metals on plants and human beings are well established therefore, a sufficient bulk of baseline data regarding the concentrations of heavy metals in lake water as well as time bound variations in the concentrations of these metals is essential for the timely implementation of remediation processes.

Status: Completed

Purpose: The objective of the water quality monitoring of the lakes around Maitri (70?, 45 52? S 11?, 44 03? E) in the Schirmacher Oasis, Antarctica was to (i) determine the quality of water in its natural state which might be available for the future needs and to assess (ii) the impact of activities by human and scientific operations upon the quality of water in its suitability for required uses.
