Brief Description (Abstract):

Chemical characteristics such as salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, silicate, calcium, magnesium, potassium, fluoride, bromide, iodide, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, nickel, cobalt, lead and cadmium were measured up to 5 meters in the ice shelf, in the surface waters of a freshwater late in Antarctica and at several water depths in the polynya.

Status: Completed

Purpose: Antarctica is an uncontaminated datum point for environmental studies. Therefore, an examination of the potential pollutants should give rise to a base value for comparing with time their increase in the marine environment. In this respect, the glacial ice of Antarctica when compared with the Himalayan glaciers can indicate the concentrations of pollutants at the Southern and northern extremities of the Indian Ocean.
