Brief Description (Abstract):

Orthogneiss with tabular to lensoid pyroxene-amphibolite enclaves, is exposed in the ice-free areas of Payer and Weyprecht Mountains. Orthogneiss was emplaced late syntectonic to D2 deformation under amphibolite facies conditions which imparted a homogeneous foliation. The field relations and geochemical parameters suggest an I-type affinity for the granitic orthogneiss, while the pyroxene-amphibolite enclaves are metamorphosed products of basic igneous rocks.

Purpose: Payer-Weyprecht Mountains and associated nunataks are exposed about 80 km southeast of Gruber massif (Wohlthat mountains) in the Central Dronning Maud Land ,East Antarctica (Fig 1). The outcrop free area between the two mountain ranges is occupied by thick continental ice sheet. Geological mapping of these distant mountains covering an area bounded by latitudes 71?4936 &amp 72?0548S and longitudes 13?0934 &amp 14?4927E, was undertaken during the eleventh Indian expedition to Antarctica.
