Brief Description (Abstract):

Schirmacher Oasis (SO) region of East Antarctica is known for 118 lakes, broadly categorized into pro-glacial, land locked and epi-shelf lakes. During the XXV ISEA 2005-06, mapping of the palaeolakes and the dry lake beds of the region of East Antarctica was done. Based on distribution of the sediment cover and detailed lithological, sedimentological and chronological study of ten profiles in -35 sq km of the SO region, five areas have been mapped that were occupied by large lakes during the Holocene. The water bodies were present from the Holocene (-10,000 to 3000 years BP) and have reduced in size by negative water balance. This desiccation can possibly be attributed to the combined effect of recession of glaciers feeding them, low melt water, low precipitation and strong winds. Several of these lakes have been reduced in size to mere lake-lets and ponds.

Purpose: The lakes in ice-free regions of Antarctica are unique on this planet. The persistent ice covers them for 6-8 months a year, minimizes windgenerated currents and reduces light penetration, as well as restricts sediment deposition into the lake. These are modem-day equivalents of periglacial lakes that were common during glacial periods at temperate latitudes and offer an important record of catchment and environmental changes.
