The Japanese animated movie Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi ("Spirited Away" or the Voyage of Chihiro) by Hayao Miyazaki of 2003 was an outstanding success around the world. It received an Oscar for best animated movie and rave reviews. It was not made specifically for a western audience and conveyed a very Japanese flair of river, wood and water spirits.
