Chan Chan, the largest citadel of South America, was the religious and administrative centre of the capital of the Chimuú civilization. Its ruins still show the vast extent of the city over an area of 20 km2.
Chan Chan contained temples, palaces, urban living areas and large avenues. More temples are found in the surrounding countryside. The photos below give an impression of the archaeological site and some of the restored parts.
