Soranus was the leading Greek gynaecologist, obstetrician and pediatrician in Rome. His writings determined medical understanding and practice of women's health, pregnancy and infant care for nearly 1500 years.
His work "On Midwifery and the Diseases of Women" contains descriptions of several measures for contraception and complications during delivery. Some of his writings, such as the description of delivery feet first, anticipated clinical procedures that were considered new discoveries during the 15th century.
In his work "On Acute and Chronic Diseases" Soranus discussed the treatment of mental illnesses. His suggestions are comparable to modern psychology.
Soranus was interested in the history of medicine. The oldest known biography of Hippocrates was from his hand.
