Roman highways are masterworks of civil engineering. When I was a student in Germany I spent the occasional weekend in heath country to walk on a well preserved stretch of Roman road. The feeling to walk on blocks of stone that were placed there for that very purpose some 1800 years ago is hard to describe. It made every such weekend memorable.
