Although the houses are several storeys tall, individual rooms are larger today than in the earliest cities, and the population density is lower. But for most people in Calcutta it has become impossible to escape from the crowded conditions even for a day - the city expanded beyond reasonable size, and even public transport makes it a day trip to reach the countryside.
