Evidence of downward movement in the frontal zone as seen in observations of fluorescence in the western Mediterranean Sea. The position of the frontal zone is evident from the salinity field (top), but the downward water movement can only be inferred from the chlorophyll distribution seen in the fluorescence measurements (bottom).

The top picture shows a well-marked front observed from salinity measurements; the bottom picture is the same section for chlorophyll fluorescence. It shows a tongue of fluorescence, a measurement of phytoplankton biomass, being drawn into deep water by physical processes at the front.
