Propagation of coastal trapped waves along the Indian Ocean coast of Australia as seen in sea level records for July, 1997. Each horizontal division is 0.2 m, each vertical division is one day.
The sea level records from Darwin and Broome show short period fluctuations of small amplitude. Large travelling disturbances are generated in the Indian Ocean and first seen at Hillarys (Perth). They propagate southward and eastward and reach Bass Strait (Lorne and Stony Point) and Tasmania (Burnie) within three days.
