Examples of vortex streets behind an island
observed in the atmosphere. The island of Guadelupe is seen to
produce a von Karman vortex street. Two vortices are visible in the first
image, the vortices on the other side of the vortex street cannot be seen
because of a break in the cloud cover; the image is adapted from
NASA (1968).
The second image gives a closer view of the same island on a different
occasion and displays only the first eddy of the vortex street; the
image is adapted from NASA (1967).
