warm core eddy (right). An increase in current strength lifts the
thermocline up from position A to position B, bringing cold
nutrient-rich water onto the shelf. Likewise, a change of
eddy position which squeezes it against the shelf lifts the thermocline
from C to D, producing dynamic uplift as shown.
The current direction (current coming out of the image) is given for the
southern hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere the current runs into the page.
