A salinity section along the axis of Baltimore Harbour, a sub-estuary of Chesapeake Bay. As in all estuaries, the temperature field is of secondary importance for the circulation, and isohalines can be seen to represent isopycnals. This establishes an inward directed pressure gradient at the top and at the bottom of the sub-estuary.
