This final section offers cocnlusive proof that ar 44°S south of Tasmania there is no STF. Temperatures and salinities are both lower than found in the STF (temperatures < 9°C are outside the colour scale used and therefore shown as black), and the density is consistently above 26.75, much too high to be associated with the STF.
The outstanding feature of this leg is the very low stratification despite very large temperature and salinity changes and associated extreme horizontal gradients. It appears that the subpolar region just south of the STF displays the most complete density compensation of the entire voyage.
