This leg runs north-south near 145°E. It shows an intense front near km 185 where SST changes from 12°C to < 9°C (temperatures < 9°C are outside the range of the colour scale and therefore shown as black) and SSS from 35.1 to 34.5. Although this overlaps with the core ranges of the STF found further west, temperatures throughout the water column are much too cold to suggest the presence of the STF. The feature seen in this leg must be an expression of subpolar dynamics and associated with the Circumpolar Current.
A remarkable aspect of the feature is the temperature and salinity minimum just south of the front. As the ship proceed further south temperature and salinity both recover somewhat from their low values, and this recovery is perfectly density compensated. As a result there is a horizontal density gradient on the northern side of the temperature and salinity minimum but not on the southern side.
