Moving away from the vicinity of the continental shelf well into oceanic waters this leg gives a clear representation of the STF in the extreme east of the region.

The surface location of the largest SST and SSS gradients do not coincide and the ranges differ from those found in the west. SST now changes at 13° - 14°C, salinity at 35.1 - 35.4 with a secondary high gradient near 34.9 - 35.0. As a result the core STF density remains the same at 26.50 - 26.55.

The density section shows another large horizontal gradient at km 320 in the density range 26.65 - 26.70. This region is, however, in disticnly colder waters and therefore not a place to look for the STF.

This leg shows the largest continuous inversion layer observed during the voyage, between km 170 - 250 at 150 m depth.
