This leg is the longest transect of the voyage. In search of warm water on the subtropical side of the STF it extends into the continental shelf. (The black region in the temperature image at km 410 here indicates the ocean floor and not just the end of the Seasoar tow.)

The leg traverses another region of low gradients. The surface expression of the STF is seen at km115 where the SST changes from 12.0°C to 12.5°C, salinity from 34.9 to 35.1 and density from < 26.5 to > 26.5, but the 12°C isotherm remains above the 200 m depth level throughout the transect.

There is some indication of geostrophic flow close to the shelf where the 12°C isotherm reaches greater depth, but it is not clear at this stage whether this flow is associated with an expression of the STF or whether it is related to an independent process on the shelf.
