PRELIMINARY EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION ... This bulletin applies to areas within and bordering the Indian Ocean. It is issued by Tsunami Service Provider INDIA in support of the UNESCO/IOC Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWS). 1. EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION IOTWS-TSP INDIA detected an earthquake with the following preliminary information: Magnitude: 6.5 M (Moderate) Depth: 10 km Date: 06 Dec 2016 Origin Time: 2203 UTC Latitude: 5.26 N Longitude: 96.24 E Location: Northern Sumatra, Indonesia 2. EVALUATION Earthquakes of this size sometimes have small potential to generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along the coast located within 100 KM of the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility. However, so far there is no confirmation about the triggering of a tsunami. An investigation is under way to determine if a tsunami has been triggered. RTSP INDIA will monitor sea level gauges near epicenter and report if any tsunami wave activity has occurred. 3. ADVICE This bulletin is being issued as advice. Only national/state/local authorities and disaster management officers have the authority to make decisions regarding the official threat and warning status in their coastal areas and any action to be taken in response.
